MATES is a partnership between the University of Auckland and the Pacific Foundation for Health, Education and Parent Support. Through it's mentoring programme MATES is connecting university students with secondary school students who are at risk of underachieving, yet have the potential to succeed at tertiary study.

The project has been launched at three Auckland schools with thirty-eight university students selected as mentors and matched with students from these schools.

Mentors aim to help the secondary students develop better study habits, enhance their educational opportunities and encourage them to progress to university.
